Redfoot Tortoise quick facts
  • aka Red-Foot tortoise, Red Footed tortoise
  • beautifully colored tortoises from tropical South America
  • up to 20" and 22-33 lbs, but typically 12"-18" and 13-16 lbs
  • needs warm temperatures (80-88° F) and high humidity (50-80%), they suffer if kept in dry conditions
  • their dietary needs are different than that of Star tortoises and Mediterranean tortoises, they can eat more fruit and even some animal protein
  • adults need large outdoor enclosures
  • ideal pet tortoise for warm and humid climates like in Florida and Hawaii, if you have a large yard
  • active, friendly, sociable, smart, a very popular pet tortoise
  • does not hibernate
  • Cherryhead Redfoot is 'variation' that often has a bright red head and may stay smaller in size, possibly 7"-12"
  • Yellowfoot Tortoise (Geochelone dentriculata) is larger than Redfoot, up to 18"-22", they require even higher humidity than Redfoots
