Brief intro
- a wonderful pet tortoise
- one of the best tortoises for a new keeper, especially the eastern species
- aka Mediterranean
tortoise, European garden tortoise
- subspecies T. hermanni boettgeri (eastern) and T. hermanni hermanni (western)
- old subspecies T. hermanni hercegovinensis (Dalmatian) is now included in the T. hermanni boettgeri

- from southern Europe
- up to 5"-9"
- lives in semiarid plains
- native to temperate (not tropical) regions
- likes to climb and dig
- hardy, easy to care for, mild mannered, personable, outgoing, active, curious, adaptable
- requires the same care as Greek and Russian Tortoises
- should be kept outdoors during the warm summer months
- large, open tubs or tortoise tables are best for indoor housing
- hibernates in the wild
