(Bowsprit tortoise, Chersina angulata)

The beautiful Angulate tortoise (Chersina angulata) is native to South Africa and Namibia. It should not be confused with the Madagascar Angulated Tortoise, aka Angonoka or Ploughshare tortoise (Astrochelys yniphora).

Angulate is also called the South African Bowsprit tortoise.

Angulates have high-domed shells.

They have lovely heads.

And beautiful shells with dots and triangles.

Angulate tortoises prefer dry, sandy habitats.

Aka Cape Angulate tortoise.

Close up of the beautiful head.

Warming up under the heat lamp. Angulates prefer dry conditions.

Male Angulate tortoises use their long gular shields to overturn each other when fighting over females. Because Angulates are 'Fighting tortoises', they are are best kept in pairs or separated by sexes. This male is a young adult, so his gular shield will grow longer with age.
